Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson made relief efforts after Hurricane Hugo more personal, “adopting” a young couple who are teachers at Lutheran South Academy to help.
The couple had major losses in the flooding after Hurricane Hugo. The Jefferson congregation sent a semi load of appliances, household items and more to the couple, with delivery this past Thursday.
Other families were adopted by other Lutheran churches. “It makes the giving very personal and the people receive what they need, not random things that people choose to donate,” said Ellie Menz, a member of Trinity Lutheran and IOWAY (Individual Outreach With Adults and Youth) director for Iowa District West.
Also, Iowa District West collected the funding to purchase and ship 702 sheets of sheet rock, sheet rock mud, dolls, and kitchen items to the school and other faculty members.
Help was sent to Florida as well. Additionally, through the generosity of Lutheran church members in the western half of Iowa, $5,000 in food, diapers and supplies were sent to a church in Fort Myers, FL, to a church that is distributing items to migrant workers’ families who suffered major losses in Hurricane Irma.
Ramthun Trucking of Manson donated the transportation and driver for one of the loads.
